Letters to Frederick W. Kirtland from family, friends and business associates. The letters deal with a wide range of topics including family matters such as travel, health and child rearing; personal matters including requests for Kirtland to inquire as to the availability of work; business matters relating to Kirtland's position as a store manager; and political topics such as the Bank of the United States, economic conditions, Van Burenism and Jacksonianism. The letters from Kirtland's sisters Caroline and Julia and his brother-in-law Cooper Sayre form a substantial portion of the collection. These letters discuss family matters including the birth of children, financial conditions, the weather, farming activities and local happenings of note. The letters from Peter Osterhout number 14 items. These letters discuss the purchase of goods for Osterhout's store and include lists of merchandise, quantities and prices. Also included are references to merchants such as Dibblee and Brown, with whom Osterhout did business. Charles Courter managed stores in Cobleskill and Lawyersville, N.Y. His letters contain discussions of a business nature as well as political commentary. The miscellaneous letters in the collection are from a number of different individuals, mostly from Durham and Schoharie, requesting assistance with jobs, advice, goods or are merely just friendly letters from friends back home. One letter discuss an outbreak of cholera in Schoharie.

Kirtland was the son of Daniel Kirtland of Durham, Greene County, N.Y. He relocated to Schoharie County, N.Y. to manage a store for Peter Osterhout. Later Kirtland moved to New London Connecticut to manage a store there. Kirtland's sister Caroline married Burton G. Morss and settled in Prattsville, N.Y.
